fil-i-bus-ter n. 1. U.S. Politics a. the use of irregular or obstructive tactics by a member of a legislative assembly to prevent the adoption of a measure generally favored or to force a decision against the will of the majority.
Democrats can call their late breaking action against UN Ambassador nominee John Bolton whatever they want, but in reality, it's a filibuster. There is treachery involved as well: Dem. leader Harry Reid had reportedly made a commitment to Majority Leader Bill Frist that Bolton would not be filibustered. Reid today made the astonishing claim that(Hat Tip: Blogs For Bush): "This is the first filibuster that's been conducted in this Congress..."
In fact earlier in the week, Democrats said there would be no filibuster, yet today, Senators Dodd and Biden sent a letter to Senate Democrats urging a no vote on cloture. Suddenly, Dodd and Biden demanded to see information from the White House, yet they are certain to vote against Bolton. Will they change their mind based on the content of this information? Of course not, they merely wish to derail the nomination by any means necessary and thus have resorted to the Democrats' last remaining core belief - the filibuster. As Michelle Malkin said:
So much for "comity." And "getting things done."
